make your bedroom uniquely yours // DIY decor ideas

When you walk into your bedroom, what’s your first impression? Do the colors, style, and decor say YOU?

Today I’m sharing 11 ideas for decorating your room frugally and DIY. Most importantly, these will help you personalize your space to be uniquely yours.

Before we get into it, I want you to take a moment to think…

Who are YOU? Age, initials, social security number… wait jk. What is your style and what are you all about? Maybe you’re a horse girl, bookish person, or super love wildflowers. Then, pick a theme or colors for your bedroom if you like! This will help pin-point how you should decorate.

Do you like travel? Craft hot air balloons out of small globes and twine baskets, and hang those from the ceiling; or hang a collage of old license plates from places you used to live! Are you bookish? Love music or sports? Search Pinterest for more inspo! There are so many great interest-specific decor ideas on the internet! πŸ˜€πŸ‘

1// Use washi tape or electrical tape on your door for a funky look

>>tutorial at I Spy Diy<<

Spice up your boring bedroom door with tape-designs in your favorite colors! Add a message or write your name with letters cut from tape. And have fun!

Note: Most of these DIYs are renter-friendly. This one, though, depends on the strength of your tape (if it removes the paint when peeled away). If you’re using washi tape, you should be fine since washi-tape is not as strong.

2// Write your favorite quote on the wall

Paint a favorite life quote or literary reference on your wall! (With permission of course πŸ˜› ) Simple, beautiful, and really helps to make your room unique!

You can use stencils, or for a less-permanent way, use removable wall decals.

3// Create a Polaroid photo wall

>>tutorial on the blog<<

Keep your best times right beside your bed, with this cheap and easy but absolutely gorgeous DIY. No expensive Polaroid camera required! Optional: Clip your favorite flowers among the photos.

4// Sew t-shirts into momento throw pillows

>>tutorial at Jenn N<<

You know those tshirts you can’t seem to get rid of because they’re so full of memories, but you honestly don’t wear them anymore? They can be saved! Make them into cute momento throw pillows that you can keep and cuddle.

I can’t wait to do this to a couple of my own tshirts!

5// Give your mirror an upgrade

Are you tired of that old, plain mirror in your room? Redo it!

  • Apply a few coats of paint and beat it up for a shabby chic look.
  • Glue on fake flowers, or sea shells from trips to make it so much cuter!
  • Write a quote in write-on wipe-off marker, something you need to be reminded of often.
  • Doodle flowers/vines or cat faces haha around the frame.

I recently re-did an old mirror for my sister’s and my room. Tell me in the comments if you want me to do a full tutorial on how to repaint/personalize a mirror?

6// Personalize initials to display on your wall

There are a million ways to decorate card board letters from a craft store. Use your initials or a word that is meaningful to you, and decorate the letters in your style! Whether with scrapbook paper, gluey bandanna, or even flowers like above!

7// Make a cozy chilling spot

Designate a corner of your room to be your kingdom and make a tent! A soft blanket, sparkly lights, and all the books and snacks — basically ANYTHING cozy is allowed to be in your corner.

This is an especially good idea if you share a room and just need a little space of your own. πŸ˜‰

8// Craft a DIY bed canopy

>>tutorial at Burlap and Blue<<

Make a dreamy princess canopy for your bed! You could intertwine fairy lights into the tulle.

You could also add a hanging mobile from the middle of the canopy. A few ideas are:

  • seashells
  • feathers
  • glow-in-the-dark stars (you can easily make your own with glow-in-the-dark craft paint and cardboard star shapes)
  • Polaroids on twine
  • or whatever says YOU! πŸ˜€

9// Decorate with your birth-month flower

(image via google)

A fun, unique idea is to decorate your room using your birth flower/the colors it is.

Mine is an aster… I’m jealous of ya’ll with March birthdays! πŸ˜‰

10// Hang an aesthetic collage

Don’t be shy to hang things you like all over a bedroom wall! Aesthetic pictures cut from magazines, art from friends or that you created, postcards from places you’ve visited, your movie or book fandoms, coordinating paint chips, and even dried flowers!

11// Use removable wallpaper/wall decals on practically everything!

>>tutorial at Pretty Real Blog<<

Cover your ceiling fan blades in high quality contact paper or removable wallpaper. If you use white, there’s a good chance you could paint designs over the paper. I haven’t tried it yet, but I hear it works!

(I’m dying to use this idea to be able to paint sunflowers on something in our rental… aaagh…)

Apply wall decals (found at the dollar store or any craft store) to your closet door, mirror frame, or dresser drawers.

Note: If you’re planning to remove the decals later, make sure to check the package to see if they are fully removable and gentle on walls.

Last removable wall design idea– fabric wallpaper accent wall! You’ll just have to click through to see what this is… SO COOL! >>tutorial at HG TV<<

Note: All pictures in this post (except the photo memory wall) were found on Pinterest. For source websites, visit this Pinterest board.

I hope you guys were inspired to try some of these DIYs in your own bedrooms!

I know I was! Pardon me while I dash off to make some tshirt throw pillows and set up a cozy corner. πŸ˜‰

Tell me in the comments– what are YOUR ideas for making a bedroom unique? I’d love to hear and maybe there will be a part 2 to this post! πŸ˜€
