9 songs that help me through hard times

I know from experience that sometimes life can stink. I’ve found that good music helps me survive while going through hard times, from everyday struggles to painful tragedies. Here are my 9 songs that are real and tearful but also full of truth and hope.

1. Blessings, by Laura Story

“‘Cause what if your blessings come through raindrops
What if Your healing comes through tears
What if a thousand sleepless nights are what it takes to know You’re near
What if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguise”

2. After the Last Tear Falls, by Andrew Peterson

“And in the end, the end is oceans and oceans of love and love again
We’ll see how the tears that have fallen
Were caught in the palms of the Giver of love and the Lover of all
And we’ll look back on these tears as old tales”

3. Even If, by Mercy Me

“I know You’re able and I know You can
Save through the fire with Your mighty hand
But even if You don’t
My hope is You alone
I know the sorrow, and I know the hurt
Would all go away if You’d just say the word
But even if You don’t
My hope is You alone”

4. Always Good, by Andrew Peterson

“Do You remember how Mary was grieving?
How You wept and she fell at Your feet?
If it’s true that You know what I’m feeling
Could it be that You’re weeping with me?

Arise, O Lord, and save me
There’s nowhere else to go

You’re always good, always good
Somehow this sorrow is shaping my heart like it should
And You’re always good, always good”

5. It’s Going To Be Alright, by Sara Groves

“I did not come here to offer you cliches
I will not pretend to know of all your pain
Just when you cannot, then I will hold out faith, for you

It’s going to be alright
It’s going to be alright”

6. Is He Worthy, by Andrew Peterson

“Do you feel the world is broken?
(We do)
Do you feel the shadows deepen?
(We do)
But do you know that all the dark won’t stop the light from getting through?
(We do)
Do you wish that you could see it all made new?
(We do)”

7. Haven’t Seen It Yet, by Danny Gokey

“Have you been hoping that things would have changed by now?
Have you cried all the faith you have through so many tears?
Don’t forget the things that He has done before
And remember He can do it all once more
It’s like the brightest sunrise
Waiting on the other side of the darkest night
Don’t ever lose hope, hold on and believe
Maybe you just haven’t seen it, just haven’t seen it yet”

8. Do It Again, by Elevation Worship

“Your Word will come to pass
My heart will sing Your praise again
Jesus, You’re still enough
Keep me within Your love
My heart will sing Your praise again
Your promise still stands
Great is Your faithfulness, faithfulness
I’m still in Your hands

This is my confidence, You never failed”

9. Oh My Soul, by Casting Crowns

“Oh, my soul
You’re not alone
There’s a place where fear has to face the God you know
One more day, He will make a way
Let Him show you how, you can lay this down
‘Cause you’re not alone
Oh, my soul, you’re not alone”

    1. Aw yay! That song has definitely helped me through a lot of stuff recently, I especially love the line “It’s like the brightest sunrise, Waiting on the other side of the darkest night”.

  1. I LOVE “Blessings”! I’ve literally been listening to it on repeat for months now, as there have been issues my family and I have been dealing with. And Andrew Peterson’s “Last Tear”.

Isn’t it amazing how music can speak and minister to your soul? I can be having a really tough day, turn on music, and everything can be alright again for a short moment. The issues we are facing have been tough, and we have cried many tears through this, yet turn on music and we can start singing and laughing, and just be ourselves, sans the problems, again.

And I’ll let you in on a secret: while we enjoy and find encouragement and comfort in songs like these, about hard things in life, apparently it was made clear Sunday that when things get really bad, and we’re really stressed, “Silly Songs with Larry” will make everything okay again. The whole family was singing along and laughing like crazy — it had been a stressful day, and just to laugh was nice 😀 =P

I’m off to listen to these other ones . . .

  2. I actually don’t know any of these, but I completely know the feeling. A song that really helped me when I needed it was “Always Only Good” by Ron Hamilton. It was the perfect message and it was tied to a really sweet memory. 😍
