Today, September 26th, is Johnny Appleseed Day! Celebrate by watching this timeless, free cartoon and baking a yummy apple pie!
About this time of year when we lived in the green Northwest, the apple trees would be ready for picking. We’d all put on our jackets and boots and tramp out into the crisp autumn world to relieve our neighbors’ trees of the yummy red fruit. Some of my favorite memories are the crazy adventures we had while trying to pick apples that were waaay up there! LOL
I would wonder who first planted the huge, overgrown one hidden back in a forest of regular evergreens. I mused about who pruned the ones for years and years on the farm before the sweet people came who lived there at the time.
And sometimes I would whistle the super catchy Johnny Appleseed song, as I caught apples my brother would toss to me from his perch in the branches. 😉
“Oh the Lord’s been good to me, and so I thank the Lord for giving me the things I need, the sun and the rain and the apple seeds. The Lord’s been good to me!”🎵
Today I am thankful for the perseverance of the valley’s early settlers and that someone thought to plant a tiny little seed in the hard soil, so that someday in the future a group of kids could pick their own juicy apples on a chilly autumn day. ❤
I’ve always ADORED apples. Every time someone cuts an apple to make something I claim the core. 😛 I love applesauce, whole apples, apple crisps, apples in peanut butter!
But most of all I like apple pie. 😀
What is your favorite kind of pie? And happy Johnny Appleseed Day to one and all!
