National Thrift Shop Day is August 17th. Time to get your friends together for this fun thrift store challenge!!
We recently discovered there is really truly a holiday for thrifters! National Thrift Shop Day is the time to have fun bargain hunting here and there at your favorite second-hand stores.
We even took it one step further…
And made up this festive challenge!
Look For Special Deals
Many of our local thrift stores are having special sales to celebrate this national holiday. Like the sales going on at one of our favorite, go-to stores– Savers!
Goodwill has different deals all across the nation. Things all the way from VIP members getting $5 OFF with any purchase of $20 or more, to all blue and purple tagged clothing for men, women and children for just $1!
So before you decide what thrift stores to swing by, check to see what deals are near YOU!
We went to a big bright thrift store near us called Deseret Industries, because, who doesn’t love the adrenaline rush of rocketing inside, 30 minutes till closing time??!!
Make It an Event
Once you have chosen a thrift store (or two, or three! Why not make a day of it?) invite people to come with you!
Siblings, your besty, or a gaggle of friends just looking for a good time. Or hey, why not even make this into a frugal date? You’ll definitely get to know each other more by the end of it. 😉
We hauled along our younger sister, Princess M, to do the challenge with us.
Extra Challenge: leave ALL money, EVERY penny in the car!
To be completely honest, we’re both currently broke. Or, would be… if we had walked into this thrift store with the tiny bit of cash we had! 😛 For completely cost-free fun, leave your wallets in the car!

Dive In and Thrift!
Here’s how the game works–
Set a meet-up time at the dressing rooms…
Separate and dive into the racks of clothes…
And choose an outfit for each other! Try to pick up something you think your friend would like, guessing at their favorite styles.
Bonus Idea: do SILLY outfits!
Cowgirl in heels?! Bright neons and a leather skirt?! For an extra fun spin on this challenge, choose outfits for each other that are goofy!
Have a Fashion Show!
Now comes the real test. 😉 😛 Meet your friend back at the dressing rooms and swap your armloads of clothes.
Then try the outfits on!
“One, two, three” and come out at the same time to see each other’s outfits!
Rate how perfect your outfit guesses were, if you would buy yours, and what you think of each piece! Also, take a peek at the price tags and enjoy the shock! 😛

“I loved this outfit soo much! Anna picked it out perfectly (my only two thumbs I’ve got up)! I totally would have bought the whole outfit (especially the skirt <3) if they hadn’t each been a little too big. Thankfully you can’t see the floppy, toeless ends of the shoes. XD The whole time was super fun! And it was probably a record-breakingly short trip. 😉 ~Pearl

“The clothes Princess M handed me were all SO CUTE. This skirt (blue, yeesss!) was a sweet length and twirled y’all! Tying the white, sleeveless shirt made it the perfect length and a playful look. This was totally my style! 5 thumbs up, M!” ~Anna

“I love it. It was so floaty and pretty!! The shoes were very cute. <3” ~Princess M
And there ya have it! We even made a cool vlog for ya’ll of the trip…
You should definitely try this fun challenge at your favorite thrift store. We had a blast– giggly sister-time, fashion chats, and learning new things about each other!
AND we spent zero money!!!
Hope you enjoyed this post, and happy National Thrift Shop Day, people! ❤
Yo, did you enjoy this? Pin it!
Aww!! That’s such a cool trip! 😀 We’ve done that many a times, and it’s super fun to see what everyone picks out for you! 😀

Thanks, Liberty!!! Yasss, isn’t it the best? It was really cool to see what we each thought was the other’s style. 🙂

*sobs* Well, there’s always next year. XD
Indeed. It’s a lot like Goodwill. All my family shop there, cause we’re all broke. 😛 We call it the VV boutique!
Aw, thanks! *grins cheekily* I’m kinda like Woodstock the bird, and my sister likes to call me the bunting, so it stuck. 🙂

That’s great (not the being broke part :P) and VV Boutique sounds so cute (and not thrift store-ish)!! ❤
Cute. 😀 Have you seen the Peanuts Movie??! Woodstock and Snoopy are so cute together in it especially when Woodstock is editing Snoopy's novel. :O XD ❤ ❤

You are so welcome!!
I LOVE to thrift shop. I hate spending a lot of money and have a more old-fashioned style, so thrift stores are my paradise. I often buy something and then alter it later. 🙂
We would have a blast! 😛

Totally agree with you on those two points!! 😀
That’s so neat you can do that! We should have you do a guest post about how to alter clothes since it’s super cool and frugal. 😉
Ooh, yes we would!! 😀
Thanks for your encouraging comments, Greta (Great)! 😛 🙂

Wow yay! We shall have to contact you sometime about a collab/guest post! 😉
Was wondering… have you ever altered tshirts? We want to try it sometime!! ~Anna

Such fun! 😛
Ooooh, I’ve never tried that, but have really wanted to try!
I have used t-shirts as patterns when I am sewing without an actual pattern. And I’ve sewed t-shirts into/onto a skirt for a dress…but I would love to try just the t-shirt itself…a new thought.
